Absolutely amazing, once again WDFC had set the benchmark for a fantastic night. The hall looked great, and members and guests were given the 'red carpet' treatment as Bob Currie took photos of everyone coming in... they all looked fantastic.
Daniel Griffin and Damon Ferguson set up a night of fun with slide shows, presentations, comedy photoshop work and also hillarious video takeoff's. Griff also MC'd the night... well done.
A big thanks to Bob Currie for photography on the night, to Baz for the music, David Herzina for his words on Steve Brunec's great career, and to the team of people who set the night up, and also cleaned up the next day.
Congratulations to all our fantastic winners...
A great night, and truly worthy of a great year... Well Done WDFC
RROOOOAAARRR "We rise and rise again till lambs become lions"...
I got this from the movie Robin Hood, but how true it is. Every time we lose a game, or someone knocks us down, we keep getting up and become stronger. This is how I saw WDFC yesterday. I have been at the club for 35 years and have never seen a more united club and team effort. I am one of hundreds, very proud WDFC members. The Senior team has lead from the front this year and have done us all proud. And yesterday’s grand final was a result of your fantastic efforts and well deserved.
Even before the match started we made sure it was going to be a memorable day. The under 10’s walked onto the field with the seniors, then we formed a guard of honour for club legend Steve Brunec. The number 7 banner went up and Steve led the charge. I had concerns that he may not break through the banner, so the boys had to follow close behind in case he needed a push... lol.
Unexpectedly, the game started slow as both teams sussed each other out. This is unusual for United as they normally use full force to score early goals. This was good for us as we were able get some touches and settle our nerves. The game went to plan as we let United have most of the possession in their third of the field. Once they got close to Benny, we closed them down and forced them back. Once we had the ball, we were able to put some good passes and plays together, and actually looked like the most likely to score. Both teams had a few shots and both keepers made some good saves.
United scored first via a fast counter-attacking move from deep within their half. The ball came in from right wing to a free player in middle. Mill was quickest to react in shutting United player down and I thought shot opportunity gone... but Mill’s momentum in closing down made it tough to change direction as the player turned, with his back to goal and shot ball into bottom right corner... 0-1. As disappointed as the boys were, we knew United would be too good to hold out and we got back on with the job. So quickly in fact, that we were level 2 minutes later through a typical Jazz power strike rocketed in low to the corner of the net. This is where I knew we had a game on our hands. The crowd went wild, and it was obvious that the majority of the 3000 crowd were backing the red and white. 1-all at half time.
The second half started quicker than the first, as we had kick off and pumped the ball straight into attack. The game was free flowing but with 2 great defences, there were few chances to score. We got our second goal from a United clearance from a corner. As I was lost for words for the day (no voice) I had to get the bench to yell at Cuz to move forward in front of his man. Cuz was waiting for the counterattack, but with Mill there I was comfortable for Cuz and Steve C to move forward... and as ball was headed clear it came to Cuz 35m out who unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot that would have decapitated someone’s head if they tried to head it. The ball went so fast into the back of the net, that it had the great Marty Chambers doing a Marcel Marso impression and saying WTF as it nearly took his ears off... you really had to be there to see the huge crowd go mental... WOW 2-1 up 30min to play... and against the best team of the decade.
United scored 15 min later from a free kick that landed in the box, and during the goal mouth scramble the ball was kicked into the net. 2-all. Mason was cramping up and could give no more, so it was time for Steve Brunec to come on and weave his magic. Mason came off to a fantastic applause, and Steve got a standing ovation from the crowd as he ran onto the field. The next 15min was intense as both sides tried to gain some momentum. Game finished 2-all... Extra time.
The boys had played their heart out for 90min, yet I had to ask for more. I could see the look on their faces as their bodies had just about ‘hit the wall’, but we didn't have much choice, we came too far and worked too hard to stop now... we were simply playing on adrenalin. Kruffy was next to feel the pace of the game and had to be subbed late into first half extra time and Fergus came on. No score at end of first half, but still a fast game with few chances on goal. Teams changed ends, we had kick off and went straight into attack. We knew we had 10min to go and didn't want to go to penalties... The aggression from Fergus in shutting down United forced the United player to head the ball towards Steve Brunec on the edge of the box. Steve was about to get control of the ball when the scream came “Nackers ball”... and Steve stepped aside as Nackers came sprinting through the pack, controlled the ball and made history as he put the ball into the net. The crowd erupted and ran onto the field... Wow, what a dream result... Unbelievable... Unreal. Steve Brunec was held high to cheers of the crowd, and about 200 people sang the club song in the middle of the pitch.
The night continued as we all packed the Carriers to celebrate. Steve Brunec was presented with the match ball (signed by players) and we literally lifted the roof as we sang the club song again, followed by ‘We are the Champions’... and yes, just to make it clear... WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!
Congratulations boys on an unbelievable end to the year. We are finally back where we belong... on top. RRRROOOOOAAAAARRRRRR!!!!!
Thank you to Carriers for staying open for us, thanks to Baz for the music, and many thanks to WDFC, Craig & Kelly, and Steve Morrison for putting a combined $2000 over the bar for all members to enjoy.
Just a reminder that Presentation Night is this Saturday - September 17 at "The Hangar". The premises will be open from 9am so players can decorate their own tables if they like.

Well this is it, Grand Final, the 'Big Prize', and with over 120 training sessions (10,000 min) there should be absolutely no mistake, that we are ready to take on the giants of AWFA Albury United.
Since our first training day last November, this has always been our goal. We have a fantastic playing group and have rotated over 20 players through the senior team to finally come up with, what we hope is a well balanced and motivated match winning team. Our results during the year have been up and down, but we have always played good football. Sometimes you learn more by losing close games, and that knowledge will serve us well on Sunday. We also have the added incentive to congratulate Steve Brunec after 20+ dedicated years at senior level in the red and white.
Sunday’s final for us will be won on the ground with fast counterattacks and quick shutdowns in midfield. Our biggest danger is their aerial threat and strength. Unfortunately we can't match them in the air, which means we have to work harder at ground level to keep pressure on every pass for 90 min.
We must make sure there are no easy balls and also that we make no mistakes. I believe that if we make no mistakes we can win... this will be the key. Can we stay focused for 90min of pressure football??? Only the last 90min of the season will tell.
Results aside, please come back to Carriers after game and celebrate a fantastic year, both on and off the field.
Grand final team: Benny, Nackers, Cuz, Mill, Steve C, Sheep, Kruffy, Jazz, Chris, Maso, Jedd...
Steve B, Brenno, Fergus, Robbo, Hodgy
2-1 win... someone please pinch me... I do believe we made the GRAND FINAL!
What an absolutely amazing result. I would have to say it would have been one of the most intense games I have coached... and that’s a lot of games. Right from our warm up we were 100% focused on task at hand, and when the whistle went, the game went exactly how we expected. Melrose threw everything at us trying to score in the first few minutes and dominate the game early like they did last time. The boys were instructed to soak up the pressure for the first 10min, and then when they settled, we would start to play our game. We had runners left, right and through the middle. We had some great chances, especially when Jedd found himself 1 v 1 twice with the keeper, but failed to convert. An excellent half with lots of promising signs. Nil all at half time.
Second half started much like the first, but this time Melrose player dribbled past 3 of our players on left side and passed to Evan who was left alone in the box... he converted to put Melrose 1 up. This just fired us up, and we seemed to lift immediately, and before Melrose could sit back and enjoy their lead, the scores were level. Mason found himself 1 v 1 with keeper after a long through ball... and his courage was amazing... as the keeper was fast approaching, Mason lent forward with his head and lobbed the ball past keeper and into net. Wow... the players and crowd went into a frenzy. For the next 15min we had them under the pump. With several chances gone begging the crowd was on edge. Then we had our slice of luck, the ball came across the box, and bounced and hit the hand of a Melrose player... PENALTY. I would much rather a goal in play, as the penalty made the scene so intense, that the crowd went quiet as Mill stepped up and put ball on the spot. There was never going to be any question as to who was going to take it. Everyone stepped aside, and I reckon with a heartbeat of 200, Mill buried the ball into the net. Pandemonium went through the crowd as we went 2-1 up. After an amazing celebration, it was fantastic to see how quickly we got back on the job. Pressure was kept on Melrose midfield to restrict plays and runs, but frustrations started to boil, and Ben Whitehead got his second yellow card and was sent from the field with 15min left. We still created chances, but we really just defended for our lives. Great game, great result.
We had winners all over the park, as players played as expected... Benny 'flipper' Russell was kept busy in goals and made some great saves... Mill and Cuz held tight middle of defence. Steve C and Nackers had some great runs for wide defence. Midfield was fantastic, with Jazz, Mason, Chris & Ben working overtime, and Sheep and Jedd keeping Melrose defence busy.
Now, with all that said, we are already looking at the real job... bring on United in the Grand Final... WE ARE READY.
I will have a meat tray for the best designed banner if someone can design one. Please have it done by Thursday training so we can organise what materials etc we need to get it done.
Also, pasta night after training Thursday. $2 each for a bowl of pasta and drink. Anyone welcome to have pasta and watch last training session for the year, please give me an idea of numbers on Tuesday if family or friends will be there.
Congratulations to U16 and U10 who have also made the Grand Final.
Semi-final vs Melrose, and yes, we do have some unfinished business with them. The Grand Final has always been our goal. I know the debate will always continue league vs grand final... but every sport in Australia has a Grand Final, including every football State league and A-league. We want to finish the last game on the biggest stage ON TOP.
We have developed players and exposed a lot of 'new blood' to the fast pace of senior football. We would also have the youngest and least experienced side in the competition, and with only 2 players with any finals experience we really are 'the new kids on the block'. With the exception of Steve and Paul Brunec, our whole squad is under 20yrs old.
Tim Rickman was ousted for the season early with an injury, and Benny Russell has stepped in. Over the last few months he has learnt the pressures of goalkeeping. Benny will play a pivotal role for us in finals and not doubt showcase his talents for all to see.
We have also had some good news, Mill has been given the all clear to play and will most certainly retain his spot in defence. Support will be provided by Cuz, Nackers and Steve C. Mason will move back to midfield along side Chris and Whitehead. Sheep, Jedd & Jazz will again form our most feared attacking line up.
We have a talented bench to choose from, especially with Steve B making room for Mill, and also Youngy, Gav, Robbo, Hodgy, Fergus, Snaka, Brenno, Jason, Dylan & Will.
We are still maybe 2 yrs away from adding to our list of league titles, but we are more than capable of winning the Grand Final this year. We have the best supporters, and they will lift our team and keep them motivated... and join in on the club song.
We won the club championship when some teams didn't want us there, we are final contenders when we are supposed to be wooden spooners... we are all winners, all members and players.... cheers.
'We are from Diamond land, and we will fight and fight to the final whistle blows'... good luck gentlemen.
Qtr Final vs SSA 5-1 win... an absolutely amazing effort. Just when we thought it was not going to be our day, especially after shock losses by thirds and ressies, the senior team pull off an amazing victory. We were always quietly confident of a good performance, but the quietness was only because we were focused. We won the match today with an excellent display of discipline. Every player had a specific role, and they played it to perfection. Cuz, Mason, Steve C and Nackers held tight in defence and restricted SSA to only 1 shot in first half. Our midfield with Ben Whitehead, Jazz, Steve B and Chris worked tirelessly to shut down any midfield advances. Sheep and Jedd worked hard to create chances on the counterattack. We went 1 nil up at 15min mark when a great run from Jedd on left side, and an accurate cross found Jazz in the box who belted the ball into the back of the net.
For the next 30min the game became a midfield tussle as both sides worked hard for control... half time score 1 nil. Sheep scored to make it 2 up in the 54th min and Jedd finished a 1v1 in the 61st min to put us 3 up. SSA were now throwing everything at us and pulled a goal back in the 65th min to make it 3-1. The more SSA tried, the more space opened up for us... we could have scored 3-4 times before Jedd scored again in the 83rd min, and Sheep scored again in the 87th min to put the game out of reach. As we have seen earlier this year, our guys are unbeatable when all play well. Our teamwork, our intensity and belief was a pleasure to watch.
Well done boys, congratulations, and a huge cheers to all the supporters who came to watch... I'm expecting a sea of red next Saturday when every WDFC supporter will have red on... GO WDFC!
Congratulations also goes to all the other teams that made it through to the semi-final. Good luck to you all.
Semi-final vs Melrose - 6:30pm Sat 3 September.
Seniors vs SSA at Willow Park, Ressies vs Melrose at Melrose and Thirds vs Myrtleford at Melrose. Of course we are looking at all 3 teams advancing into semi finals, and that has been our goal since round 1.
Thirds are on track and should progress comfortably into semi-finals. Ressies will do it a little tougher as Melrose finished 2nd this year, but they have only beaten us by 1 goal both times this year. I am confident of a win here with the Ressies spirit getting us over the line. Seniors have also only lost to SSA by one goal this year, and we are looking forward to taking up the challenge and giving it everything we’ve got.
Our task has been made a little tougher this week, especially with the devastating news that our captain, Mill will be out for finals due to a freak training mishap that strained his right (reconstructed) knee. We are waiting on MRI scan to determine results. Also Ben DK's suspension appeal was unsuccessful and he will miss another 2 weeks. With these 2 guys out of our side, it's like Carlton playing without Judd and Murphy... BUT, as it has been proven time and time again, we have fantastic players ready to step in and show us just how much depth we have.
Cuz and Fergus will answer the call this week to bolster our defence, and are more than capable of lifting the seniors to a semi-final. Chris will be moved into midfield to take Ben DK's role, Mason will move to defence to replace Mill, and Nackers moved into his natural attacking role... good luck gentlemen.
Also, good luck to all WDFC teams playing QTR finals. If you want some pics of your games, please catch up with Fergus, Paine or Nackers who will be roaming grounds with cameras.
Please note: team photos for all mens teams will be 12:30pm at Melrose... injured, suspended players need to turn up with their gear.
SENIORS - Benny, Fergus, Mason, Cuz, Steve C, Sheep, Whitehead, Jazz, Chris, Nackers, Jedd, Steve B... Robbo, Jason Colombera, Youngy, Hodgy, Dylan
RESERVES - final team TBC Sunday - from Hodgy, Paine, Cuz, Fergus, Gav, Griffo, Mick C, Dylan, Trev, Robbo, Snaka, Will, Allen, Youngy, Brown, Toby, Jack
THIRDS - Graf, Rogalski, Betts, Allen, Bowran, Sweet, Russell, Gav, Quick, Lucas, Youngy, Jack, Last, Eric, Gigliotti, Dylan, Will
A 3-2 win on last game of the season before finals - a great way to end the home and away season. A season that had its ups and downs, and today’s game was no different.
We went one goal down within 5 min, when a loose ball fell at a City player and he fired a shot into the net. We totally dominated play from there on, and deservedly got the equaliser via a rocket from Jedd right into top left pigeon hole... 1all after 10min. 5 min later we went 2-1 up when Mason found some space after great lead up play to slot the ball home. 5 min later again we went 3-1 up when again great team play had Mason 1 v 1 with goalkeeper and a classy finish extended our lead.
Second half we created so many chances that I lost count and failed to score. Albury City never had a shot at goal, but scored when a miss kick from Mason 30m out spun and freakishly bounced over Benny’s head on the edge of the box... 3-2.
Mason, Nackers, Jedd, Steve C were among our best in a solid team performance.
Also great turn out for dinner at Carriers after game with over 50 people... cheers.
Let’s not forget that we have had a great year. We have lost some good players (congratulations to Evan Rawluck on AWFA top goal scorer), and we were written off at the start of the year to rest at bottom of ladder with Panthers... but as usual, the fantastic Diamonds spirit and depth of junior talent has far exceeded our expectations. Finishing 6th on the ladder will give us confidence this week when we face SSA at Willow Park in an elimination final.
A tough day at the office in sweltering conditions today for the reserves, up against a team that beat us last time and had dropped several senior players in an attempt to strengthen their reserves for the finals. However, our constantly improving side was up for the challenge.
After a scoreless first half, which included several wasted 1 v 1 chances for WDFC to take the lead, City broke the deadlock against the run of play. Shortly after we equalised when the lively Dylan Gavel latched onto a through ball to neatly finish for a 1-1 draw.
Despite the score we were never really in danger of losing this one due to a superb defensive effort from Brenden Hasler and Damon Ferguson who have rightly become the most central figures in our late season turnaround. A solid stint in the middle from Ian Roberts and Steve Brunec while Trevor Gavel linked up well with his brother Dylan all day.
We have done the hard work and now have the week to prepare ourselves for finals... bring on Melrose!
Congratulations on U10’s winning league championship. Well coached Nick.
Diamonds vs Albury City... Amazing how quick we find ourselves at the last game of the season. Luckily we are at home so this could be the last chance to stay and support the boys, as finals start next week and the club spreads out over Albury Wodonga. We have lost our hard man in midfield Ben DeKruiff for 3 weeks after seeing his first ever red card last week.
Due to weather and restricted training this week, we have been looking for a replacement for Ben DK to trial before finals. Ben and his sidekick Maso have been fantastic this year and in order to keep a bit of toughness and leadership in midfield, we have decided to release Mill from defence as our first trial. Mill's ability to play any role should help him slot in with Maso right from the whistle. Lucky for us we found Cuz ‘flying under the radar’ in Ressies, and he will take responsibility on our defence.
On the good news front, Jedd has pulled up well after hyper-extension of his knee last week and will keep his spot. Jason Colombera trained well during the week and seems more than capable to fill any role in seniors if required this week.
More good news... great turn out at Carriers pasta night and fantastic to see players and parents from all age groups. Let’s not forget that Carriers have great meals, and would be good to come back after last game on Sunday for dinner, and regardless of Sunday’s result, we should sit back and really look at how successful we, as a club have been this year... see you there.
This week’s teams...
SENIORS - Benny, Whitehead, Nackers, Mill, Chris, Steve C, Sheep, Maso, Cuz, Jedd, Jazz, ....Steve B, Jason, Brenno, Hodgy
RESERVES - Hodgy, Painey, Fergs, Brenno, Allen, Trev, Robbo, Griffo, Steve B, Dylan, Snaka, Graf, Quick, Benny
THIRDS - Gigliotti, Gav, Graf, Harrison, Betts, Rogalski, Young, Bowran, Russell, Quick, Last, Eric, Sweet
Due to inclement weather we have been unable to train, but someone has been spotted running around in the dark.
We sent our specialist sketch artist Hodgy down to check, and he came up with this... click to view
3-2 loss in a close fast game that could have gone either way with both sides missing chances, but unfortunately luck wasn’t on our side today.
We could tell it was going to be tough, especially after we lost Jedd when he hyper-extended his knee when tackled in the box. Jedd may have a week off but should be ok for finals. We went 1 goal down when SSA scored via a corner and a scramble in the box, but the boys are really playing with belief now and don’t know how to give up. We pulled a goal back when super sub Brenna won a tackle in defence, passed to Nackers who threaded the ball to a fast moving Sheep, who slotted the ball into the net. 1 all at half time.
No team was really in control of the game, but the crowd was enjoying a fast, quality game of football. When the second half started, we thought our luck had changed when SSA GK handled the ball outside the box. Jazz stepped up and fired a trademark ‘thunderbolt’ into back of the net 2-1. SSA had no choice but to push forward, and this seemed to suit us as we defended very well and continued to make chances on the counterattack. We conceded another soft goal when another ball from a free kick was floated into the box, again we failed to clear and the ball was slammed into net 2-2.
Still confident of a win, we continued to play well. Benny DK mistimed a tackle in midfield and saw red. Strange call from the referee as it was middle of park and the player was not injured, but this left us with 10. Still not happy with a draw we continued to push forward and also hold their attacks. Actually, in general play, SSA had only 1-2 shots on goal. But as per the previous goals we conceded, again we failed to clear ball from a corner and went down 3-2 with 5min to go.
A pleasing effort with finals fast approaching, but we will need to be a little more desperate as finals are elimination and every game could be our last. Albury City next week is now our focus and with 2 spots available as Jedd and Ben DK won’t be available, training should be competitive this week as we see who wants to step up.

Training this week...
Monday: Recovery pool session 6:30pm
Tuesday: Skills and fitness
Wednesday: Goal shooting and set plays
Thursday: Skills and fitness – game
Friday: Pasta night 6pm at Carriers... see you there.
A great day for the Reserves today! Over the last few weeks we have really locked down our team and have been starting to string some results together. The match against Boomers was a further step in the right direction, as we recorded a 4-0 win.
From the outset we began playing the brand of football we know we are capable of and took a deserved lead inside of 15 minutes when a Trevor Gavel 40-yard through ball found Daniel Griffin just on the right hand side the box, who took two touches before curling the ball spectacularly into the top left corner - surely a contender for goal of the season/decade, except he lost points for lifting his shirt in front of the crowd.
The crowd was treated to a trademark Stephen Currie "plank celebration" when he doubled the lead by lobbing the keeper with a header after latching onto a perfectly weighted Damon Ferguson free kick.
The second half was a much tighter affair and to Boomers credit they never stopped giving it their all, but after Dylan Gavel picked up a through ball and coolly finished, the game was out of reach. Several minutes later, young Dylan doubled his tally by picking up on a defensive error.
It is difficult to single out individual players in what was a total team performance, but the defensive line of Brendan Hasler, Damon Ferguson, Brett Paine, William Brown and Paul Hodgson were in fantastic form. Jason Colombera continued to stamp his claim as a future leader of the club with a solid performance partnering with Ian Roberts, Steve Brunec and Trevor Gavel through the midfield.
Now the focus turns to keeping this momentum going against Albury City next week!
Diamonds vs SSA - a team we will meet again during our finals campaign if we are successful. We are better prepared this week, and it feels great to be finally training again with extra space. After probably our toughest week over, with 3 games in 7 days, we spent most of this week with light games and recovery runs and stretches. Our only concern is again the 'man flu' which has stopped Benny, Fergus, Toby & Trev from training all week. Hodgy may get his first senior run as goalkeeper if Benny doesn't come through.
I think everyone played well vs TCW and will hold down their positions... for this week at least anyway.
This week, even though we are playing a top 3 side, I am expecting a win. A result that would be fantastic, as we are still yet to find our peak. Do we know what that means? It basically means that EVERY PLAYER plays their best, all on the same day and against the same team. For us that starts this week. We currently have 6-7consistent performers on average each week, and have been getting by. We have only lost 2 games out of the last 8, and with a full fit and firing team we are unbeatable... just ask United and Melrose.
We also have extra incentive this week as Sheep is only 1 goal behind SSA's Nordweir. Goals this week to the Sheep, and a tight defence could see him take out the AWFA top goal scorer award.
My prediction this week – a 5-2 win... Sheep (3), Jazz (2)... and Jedd to hit the post.
SENIORS - from Benny, Hodgy, Whitehead, Nackers, Mill, Chris, Steve C, Sheep, Maso, Ben DK, Jedd, Jazz... Steve B, Cuz, Fergus, Brenno
RESERVES - Hodgy, Painey, Fergs, Brenno, Toby, Trev, Robbo, Cuz, Griffo, Steve B, Dylan, Allen, Colombera, Brown
THIRDS - from Jenvey, Gav, Graf, Harrison, Betts, Rogalski, Young, Bowran, Russell, Quick, Will, Last, Eric, Sweet
2 all draw. An excellent result. A gruelling week where we had 3 tough games. TCW are last year's premiers so to come away with a point has to be seen as a great positive effort.
It was always going to be tough with injuries and fatigue, but the boys played their heart out for a well deserved point. We went 1 up via a very nice finish from Sheepy where he beat the keeper 1 on 1 midway through the first half. Half time score 1 - 0.
In the second half TCW scored early when a shot from Maynard found its way through a crowded box and into the net. We had a lapse of concentration and gave a good player too much time to shoot. We went back in front when Sheepy again scored after some brilliant pressure to win the ball and lead up work. We held this score quite comfortably and looked several times to increase our lead. As it has been for the last 4 weeks, we paid the price for not scoring when TCW equalised via a corner with 10min to go.
Overall, a good result against a quality side after a tough week. Excellent effort... well done boys... be proud.
Best players: Benny, Russell, Mill, Sheep, Whitehead, Nackers.
TCW vs Diamonds - Last year premiers vs pretender or contender?
If only I knew how we were going to play on the day, I'm sure I would have more hair. I know we can find form again when we have a full squad, and I hope we get a full squad asap so we can find our form again before finals. Team selections are tough this week as we are waiting on several injuries/fitness tests after Tuesday’s game. Nackers hasn't been able to run and Sheep is going for a knee x-ray for suspect cartilage damage, Mill has a bruised and swollen ankle and neither will commit until last minute.
We welcome back Jazz who will give us fire power up front again and take some pressure off Jedd. Let's hope they can combine, and waltz through TCW defence to score some much needed goals.
We have been ‘leaking’ goals lately, and know if we are going to win finals we must plug this up asap. Damon, Cuz & Brenno may find themselves promoted if Sheep, Mill and Nackers don't toughen up. Regardless of result, another tough game is what we need for finals build up.
Guest tipster... forget Paul the Octopus from the World Cup - Mill has predicted a 4-2 win with TCW scorers - Maynard, Gilbert and Diamonds - Jazz, Jedd (2), Mill.
We need more of this...

and less of this...

SENIORS – from Benny, Whitehead, Nackers, Mill, Chris, Steve C, Sheep, Maso, Ben DK, Steve B, Jedd, Jazz, Cuz, Fergus, Brenno, Hodgy
RESERVES – from Hodgy, Painey, Fergs, Brenno, Toby, Trev, Robbo, Cuz, Griffo, Dylan, Snaka, Betts, Allen, Colombera, Brown, Benny, Steve B, Chris
THIRDS – from Jenvey, Gav, Graf, Harrison, Betts, Gav, Rogalski, Young, Bowran, Russell, Quick, Will, Lucas, Eric, Sweet, Allen, Colombera
6-1 annihilation and that's probably a fair result. We absolutely had no answer or luck for a determined Melrose team tonight. It just goes to show, your last game means nothing as far as results go, but it's the learning you get from that game and take into your next game that counts. As the saying goes... 'You're only as good as your next game'. Remember this, and start preparing one game at a time until finals. We have lost only 2 games out of the last 8, and have 3 games left to focus on, so heads up and remember we are from Diamonds... 'When we win we're great, when we lose we''re still great'. Catch you at training.
View Prime7 news report of the Diamonds vs Melrose clash.
We may be short a couple of players, but let's not be short on supporters... come and support your club/team with a show of red & white. We also have the opportunity to play some of our talented juniors tonight (Pat Allen, Jason Colombera & Dylan Gavel), another reason to come and watch future Diamonds stars.
Tonight’s game is crucial for Melrose title hopes and will undoubtedly come out full force. We will be without the strike power of Jazz & Jedd and will need to rely on Sheep power to score goals. We have strengthened our midfield with Ben Whitehead moving in to support Ben DK and Mason, although we were up 2-1 last time with 4mins to play, this is a game we are not expected to win... or so they say. We are from Diamonds, and we only take to the field if we believe we can win. Regardless of result, a 90min x 100% effort will ensure a tough, fast game.
Team - Benny, Nackers, Chris, Mill, Jason, Steve C, Sheep, Ben DK, Mason, Ben W, Pat, Dylan, Robbo, Hodgy, Gav, Steve B
Monday night training to prepare for tonight’s “clash of the titans”
2 all draw. First half we were flat and maybe deserved to go down 1 nil early. We played ok first half, but seemed to just lack the intensity and desire to win. We gradually won back control in midfield and started to create a few scoring chances with shots going close and Jed hitting post. We managed to pull back a goal on half time when Sheep beat goalkeeper 1 on 1.
Second half we came out more determined and played really well. We dominated scoring chances but couldn't score. Wang were forced back and defended with 6 players and continued to counterattack. We scored our second when Jed again hit the post, but this time ball came out to Mason who put ball back where it belonged...in our goal...2-1. Wang's counterattacking style and pace always made them dangerous, and when a miss kick in defence managed to find a Wang player outside the box, he ran in and scored with 4 min to go. Heartbreaking result when we were in control of game.
Best players: Mason, Ben De Kruiff, Ben Whitehead, Sheep.
An unusually warm day in Wangaratta as it usually rains whenever we travel down there. Nevertheless the reserves hit the ground running against Wangaratta, creating chances from the outset before Jason Colombera scored his first reserve grade goal with a looping shot from 20 yards out. Our wave of possession continued with some slick passing and movement when Stephen Currie doubled our lead just before half time with a delicate finish from a precise Trevor Gavel through ball.
After the resumption we really stepped up our play, moving the ball swiftly all over the park before Brett Paine fed Daniel Griffin who lashed a shot into the bottom right hand corner from just outside of the box. Shortly after that goal Ian Roberts put Daniel Griffin through on goal and he cooly finished the move to make it 4-0 on the day.
It was a solid performance with valuable contributions from a constantly improving Brendan Hasler, who is hitting the form he is known for. The team was also well served by other valuable contributors on the day from Will Brown, Stephen Currie, the sharp finishing of Daniel Griffin and a 15 minute cameo from thirds goalkeeper Logan Jenvey to name just a few from an overall outstanding team performance.
It was a resounding victory with numerous positives to take out of it ahead of the big local derby against Twin City on the weekend.
Last time we played Wangaratta we lost 5-0. Wang only had 4 shots that day and 1 penalty - we had twice as many shots but were defeated by some fantastic goalkeeping. Come to think of it, that's how we lost to Myrtleford. Both games should have been over by half time, but we were punished by our inability to score. This week we have been struck by the 'man flu', Benny, Russell, Mill, Toby, Cuz, Brenno, so last minute selections may happen before kick-off. Jazz is also unavailable due to work. Either way, we will have 11 fit players ready to redeem some ‘Diamonds pride’ and do us proud. With finals on the horizon, Sunday's game will be another step in our preparation, and we will be aiming at another consistent 90min, and with some luck you will again hear the club song... “We are from Diamond Land”... “we'll fight and fight to win”.
Rain is forecast again... another day for gumboots and brollies. Hope to see you there.
Please remember to come and celebrate after the game at Carriers for dinner from 6:15pm.
SENIORS - Benny, Whitehead, Nackers, Mill, Chris, Steve C, Sheep, Maso, Ben DK, Steve B, Jedd
Bench - Robbo, Brenno, Fergs, Cuz, Dylan
RESERVES - Hodgy, Painey, Fergs, Brenno, Toby, Trev, Robbo, Cuz, Griffo, Dylan, Snaka
Bench - Betts, Allen, Colombera, Brown, Jenvey
THIRDS - Jenvey, Graf, Harrison, Betts, Gav, Rogalski, Young, Bowran, Russell, Quick, Will, Lucas, Eric
3 all draw... maybe a fair result in an expected tough physical game. We lost Jazz before the game started to a man cold, which makes his the most difficult position to fill. St Pat's put us under a lot of pressure and were intent on shutting our playing style down, but all credit to our boys as we continued to show that we can play good quality soccer.
We went up 1 nil through one of the best goals of the year... Mill won the ball on our 18m box, attacked with pace through midfield and passed to Jed who ran down the field whilst holding off an opponent and crossed the on ground back to Mill (who had just run full length of the field), who controlled ball, beat 2 players and finished low in left corner... great start.
St Pat's through their pace and strength forced 2 goals. We pulled another back when Chris converted a volley from a corner... 2 all. St Pat's scored their third goal via a keeping error, but we dug deep, especially after last week, and 15 yo Dylan scored his first senior goal with 1 min remaining as he headed in from back corner ... 3-3. Maybe not the result we wanted, but it was the effort we needed that made it a good day. All part of the learning process which will serve us well come finals. Our best players - Mason, Ben DK, Nackers, Mill, and Chris.
Marcuzzi, Marcuzzi, Morley vs Brunec, Brunec, Millynn, Colombera, Herzina... once feared when they played together, but now they will be on opposing teams. These names are synonymous to the success of WDFC for the last 30yrs. This game will be either won or lost pending who defends best on the day. St Pat's have 4 ex-Diamonds players to hold their defence.
After last week's shock loss to a passionate Myrtleford side, we come up against one of the most physical teams in AWFA. A tight compact defence on a small muddy ground will be critical to the result being in our favour. If we can hold St Pat's scoreless, I am positive that not many teams will be able to compete with our attacking line up of Sheep, Jazz, Jedd and Nackers. Set plays cost us last week, and after some gruelling training sessions this week, I'm sure the boys will be keen not to repeat last week's effort.
Rain is scheduled... bring your brollies.

A very disappointing result today, but also a valuable learning... We were beaten by a side with more passion and belief that as a team they wanted to win more than us.
We went deservedly 1 up and dominated scoring chances first half. We could have been 4 up at half time except for some excellent goalkeeping from Myrtleford keeper. Second half, hmmm... well it was like we had a different team. A couple of tough tackles from Myrtleford and all of a sudden we were scared to go for the ball. We became 2nd to the ball and lost control and momentum of the game. We conceded 3 goals via headers and we lost our way and hung our heads.
Myrtleford adapted to ground conditions on what could only resemble a 'cow paddock' and didn't even have a shot at goal, but continued to pump the ball into the goal area, where they won headers and scored... their 4th goal was their only shot during play. Considering how well we have been playing, it was an extremely bad result, but in the bigger picture, if we can understand what/how to play with passion and belief it could be a plus come finals. I think Fred's shirt says it all - see pic of the week that was taken on our ‘Dream Team’ night earlier this year.

A solid display from the Reserves today. There was a definite hunger for the 3 points right from the start and we started at such hectic pace, putting Myrtleford under the pump from the very first minute. A significant proportion of the play was held in their defensive half and it took until just before half time for the deadlock to be broken by a clever Damon Ferguson finish.
The weight of possession continued in the second half, led by a workman like performance by Stephen Currie in the middle of the park. Soon enough, sensational mid-season recruit Ben Whitehead added a second before Stephen Currie scored a well deserved goal to make it 3-0. Shortly after, the scoring was completed after another neat finish from Ben Whitehead to give us a 4-0 victory.
In tough conditions that were torturous on the legs, to be able to play at such a high standard was a testament to the calibre of players in this team. Strong performances from Stephen Currie, Brendan Hasler, Damon Ferguson, Ben Whitehead and another tireless effort from Jake Thompson made this resounding victory all the more sweeter.
REVENGE... I wonder if it's as sweet as they say? After being 2 nil up and losing 3-2 to Myrtleford in round 2, we are so determined to return the favour. We have been in exceptional form lately, and pending weather and injuries, I expect the result to be in our favour. We still have some concerns with Jazz (back), Whitehead (ankle) and Jed (holidays), but if needed, the ressies have stepped up brilliantly. Dan will again lead the defence, but will be well supported by Steve Colombera, Chris and Nackers. Ben and Mason are back from holidays are keen to make up for missing the United game. Steve & Jed will again set up many scoring opportunities for Sheep and Jazz.... expected result 3-1 Diamonds.
This week's team –
SENIORS - Benny, Nackers, Mill, Chris, Steve C, Sheep, Maso, Ben DK, Steve B, Jed, Jazz
RESERVES - Graf, Fergs, Brenno, Snaka, Trev, Robbo, Cuz, Whitehead, Griffo, Toby... Bench - Dylan, Raph, Lucas
THIRDS - from - Graf, Harrison, Betts, Allen, Rogalski, Young, Bowran, Russell, Sweet, Quick, Will, Last, Eric
19-nil... yes 19 goals to zero. After coming off one of our toughest games against Albury United last week, we faced a depleted Panthers outfit that, although they tried hard were no match for us today in freezing conditions. Congratulations to Damon Ferguson who scored his first ever seniors goal, also 5 goals each to Jarrod and Sheepy, with super veteran Steve Brunec getting a hatrick and singles to Chris Ryan, Dan Millynn, Mason Nhansana and another to veteran Paul Brunec.
It was a mentally tough game today to try and maintain some type of intensity, I know we train harder than the game was today, and we will do so again this week... but overall, its 3 points, no injuries and no cards. We have Myrtleford next week which will be a true test to our potential come finals.
A tough cold day for players and spectators. We played well in tough conditions, eventually coming away with a 5-1 victory over Wodonga Panthers in what can best be described as energy sapping conditions. The reserves took a well deserved 3-0 lead into half time thanks to 2 goals from Peter Milton and 1 to Jake Thompson. Shortly after the resumption Daniel Lucas and Brendan Graf scored before an unlucky, scrappy goal was conceded by what can best be described as a resilient Panthers outfit.
A solid all round performance with notable mentions to Brendan Graf for scoring his first reserve grade goal as well as Brendan Hassler, Daniel Griffin, Ian Roberts and Toby Currie for a solid defensive effort, and Jake Thompson and Max Betts for a solid and tireless effort all over the park. Also a good effort from Logan Jenvey from U16 for goalkeeping.
The ground conditions were not up to scratch and this really distributed our passing game. But this didn't stop us putting two clinical goals by the keeper in the first half. The second half was mostly dominated by Diamonds as Wodonga Panthers did not see that much of theire attacking half. We had our chances in the second half but we couldn't get it past their keeper. The intensity slowly dropped off towards the end of the game but we came away with the well deserved three points.
WOW... what a great result for Diamonds. Was it a shock result - I don't think so. We had good players all over the park and created many chances. Great game from Jed in midfield, Steve Colombera and Paul Brunec as wing backs, Dan and Chris controlling middle of defence. Also well done to Damon Ben Whitehead who stepped up brilliantly from ressies.
What I liked best on Sunday was the applause from supporters who cheered their team off the field and the joining in of club song in centre of field. Dan was that excited with the win that he even forgot the score lol.
Success is hard work, and is an incredible team effort, and its nice to start to get rewarded for our effort. YES we had 11 great players on the field, but also the guys who sat on the bench... to youngy that came on for 5 mins and gave 200%... to those that train, push and motivate each other... and the supporters who cheer you on and off the field... cheers to u all :)
