The Wodonga Diamonds energy and water saving project enters its last stage with the installation of 2 x 110L water tanks on the west side of the club house. The tanks will collect rainwater from the club house roof for change room showers, toilets and hand basins. Based on current usage the club estimates it will be able to save around 43,000L of water per season.
Earthworks and preparation for the tanks began the week before Christmas and the tanks were installed between Christmas and New Year. Plumbing and electrical work is currently underway and the final step will involve planting mounds to screen the tanks. The project is due for completion by 10 February 2012. Feel free to have a look as you drive past – there will be plenty of action at the club during this time.
The project is funded by Sustainability Victoria, and is supported by Wodonga Council and La Trobe University. Wodonga Diamonds has been the only sporting club to receive this sustainability grant and is leading the way in implementing energy and water-saving infrastructure.
Wodonga Diamonds would like to thank the organisations, businesses and many individuals who have contributed to the project.

We at the Club believe that sustainability is everyone’s business not just ‘Green Groups’. Our project shows people that any type of organisation can do its bit to save money and help the environment. We hope to guide and encourage members and visitors to be more energy efficient and water-wise and hope that other clubs in the area will look at adopting similar projects for their many benefits.
Have you noticed how much these bills have increased in your own homes? Have you thought about what you can do to save energy and water lately? It’s something we all think about now and then but looking around at what the club is doing, we hope to reinvigorate you all into action.
We have several ‘test families’ who are comparing last year’s usage to this year and trying to reduce their emissions and costs. Let us all challenge ourselves to do the same. Your utility bill will always show the previous year’s usage so try it yourself – ask yourselves…can I
- Turn off that light I don’t really need on?
- Change to energy saving light bulbs?
- Think about the use of solar energy in my home?
- Install sensors to limit the amount of electricity I use?
- Change to low-flow showerheads instead of yelling at the children for taking too long!
We’ll check in with you all soon to see how you are going and check what you’ve done in your own homes to cut the power / cut the bills. It’s everyone’s business to cut emissions and live greener.
